HKS Selected Designer for Scott & White Children’s Hospital

TEMPLE, TX – HKS Architects was selected by Scott & White Healthcare to lead design efforts that will facilitate the conversion of King’s Daughters Hospital into a regional children’s hospital.

Scott & White announced on April 2 it was moving ahead with plans to establish the only acute care hospital for children between Dallas and Austin. In April 2009, King’s Daughters Hospital merged with Scott & White, and leaders announced a plan to convert the community hospital into a children’s hospital.

Operating from 23 offices worldwide, HKS’s project portfolio includes children’s hospitals across the U.S. – including work at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital in Texas.

“We were impressed by the breadth of experience HKS brings to this project,” said Alfred B. Knight, MD, president and CEO of Scott & White Healthcare. “From conversions of existing facilities to hospital expansions to projects from the ground up, HKS has demonstrated it can design facilities compatible with the unique needs of younger patients.”

“We are excited and fortunate to have HKS as our partner to lead this conversion project,” said John L. Boyd, MD, CEO and CMO with Children’s Hospital at Scott & White. “Their team brings a tremendous amount of expertise in children’s healthcare design to the table which, together with our local stakeholders, will result in a premiere children’s hospital design for our children and families in Central Texas.”

According to Jeffrey Stouffer, AIA, principal and pediatrics practice leader for HKS’s healthcare group, “The firm looks forward to a dynamic collaboration with Scott & White Hospital and creative application of recent research-based pediatric design principals resulting in the innovative transformation of their children’s hospital.”

The King’s Daughters Hospital renovation is slated to begin in September 2010. Leaders anticipate the project will be completed by late summer or early fall 2011. King’s Daughters Hospital will continue emergency room operations and imaging services, and maintain a laboratory and small inpatient unit during renovations.

The new children’s hospital will feature comprehensive medical and surgical pediatric services. It will be supported by 48 private pediatric inpatient rooms, 16 private pediatric intensive care rooms, newly renovated surgical suites, a new 12-bed pediatric emergency department, broad-based laboratory services, state-of-the art pediatric equipment and a child life program.

“We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to serve Scott & White Healthcare again,” said Norman Morgan, AIA, principal designer with HKS.  “We have assembled a qualified and talented team to provide the transformation of King’s Daughters Hospital into a new children’s hospital to serve the community”
