HHS Provides $390.5 million to Improve Hospital Preparedness and Emergency Response

States, territories, and large metropolitan areas will receive grants totaling $390.5 million this month to help hospitals and other health care organizations strengthen the medical surge capability across the nation.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response will provide the funds through the Hospital Preparedness Program. The grants enhance community resilience by increasing the ability of hospitals and healthcare facilities to respond to the public health and medical impacts of any emergency, such as natural disasters, disease outbreaks, or acts of terrorism.

Hardin Construction Awarded Second Major Project At Medical Center Hospital In Odessa, Texas

ATLANTA, GA - For the second time within a year, Hardin Construction Company, LLC has broken ground on a new project for Medical Center Hospital (MCH) in Odessa, Texas.

MCH selected Hardin Construction to build a two-floor vertical expansion of the hospital's Women's Center, including a new neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and expansion of the hospital's maternity ward. The project, valued at $28.9 million, also includes demolishing a portion of the existing central energy plant and constructing a new central mechanical plant, to include road and parking lot repaving and a new playground area.

31,000 SF L.A. County South Health Center Breaks Ground Adjacent to Martin Luther King Campus

LOS ANGELES/NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- More than 350 community leaders, stakeholders and residents witnessed the official groundbreaking of the 31,000 SF Los Angeles County South Health Center, a medical office building which is located on the northwest corner of 120th Street and Wilmington Avenue, on the north end of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Medical Center Campus, in Los Angeles.

Washington Hospital Receives National Environmental Award

FREMONT, Calif. – Washington Hospital has earned an Environmental Excellence Award from Practice Greenhealth, a national organization for healthcare institutions that have made a commitment to environmentally responsible practices. The “Partner for Change Award” was presented in recognition of Washington Hospital’s achievements in developing programs to prevent pollution, reduce and recycle solid waste, eliminate mercury, reduce water and energy consumption and establish “green” purchasing policies.

Children’s Hospital Plans Addition, 124 New Beds

The Children’s Hospital in Aurora soon will launch a major, $228 million expansion, including a 124-bed addition, to handle increased patient load. The new beds will be in a 10-story, 350,000-square-foot addition to the hospital’s east tower, according to a Goldman, Sachs & Co. bond sale prospectus.

The May prospectus relates to the sale of $60.75 million in hospital revenue bonds through the city of Aurora, whose proceeds will help pay for The Children’s Hospital expansion. The hospital will repay the bond debt with interest of 5 percent a year.
